Chapter I

From the church choir to the world.

Raised in Harlem, Freddie Jackson found his voice in the pews of White Rock Baptist Church. Years singing in lounges and behind other stars sharpened a tenor that was warm, unhurried and impossibly tender.

In 1985, his debut Rock Me Tonight arrived — and the title track held the top of the R&B chart for six weeks. A new standard for romance had been set.

"You Are My Lady" and "Rock Me Tonight" make him the most celebrated new male voice in R&B.
